Birds are famous for waking up early. But a recent study finds that light pollution is causing birds to wake even earlier and go to sleep later. Bright lights have a stronger effect on birds with larger eyes, such as American robins. Birds that nest in dark areas—like holes in trees—don't seem to be greatly influenced by light pollution.

In 2023, Brent Pease, who teaches at Southern Illinois University Carbondale, was looking for a way to get his students more interested in birds. He set up a microphone outdoors so he could play the sounds of singing birds for his students indoors. Excited by this success, Dr. Pease began using a special recording device, made by a group called BirdWeather. It doesn't just record bird songs; it uses AI to find the birds that are singing. The device also records time, location, and weather information, and reports all of this online. BirdWeather collects information from people's backyards around the world. It has already collected around 1.4 billion bird song recordings.

Research data shows that light pollution had a huge effect on birds. In bright areas, birds began singing an average of 18 minutes earlier. At night, they sang for an extra 32 minutes on average. That means birds in areas with strong light pollution are being active an average of 50 minutes longer every day.

Scientists worry that light pollution influences birds' natural activities. But it's too early to tell if staying up late is actually harmful as the birds might be getting used to the new conditions. Further study is still needed to draw a conclusion.

In a Journey to the West theme(主题) park named "Xiyou World of Adventure" in Huai'an, Jiangsu, performers dressed as Sun Wukong and other characters ride on floats(花车), dancing to the fast music and waving to the crowd. The park presents many classic stories from the novel. With advanced technology, visitors can immerse(沉浸) themselves in a great journey. Thanks to the powerful Monkey King IP, the park's popularity has been on the rise.

Lisa, a visitor from Shanghai, says that the theme park is beautifully designed. She takes the ride based on Wukong fighting the White Bone Demon as an example and says it is just as good as the Harry Potter ride at Universal Beijing Resort.

Another example is "Unique Henan; Land of Dramas". It takes visitors back in time into the place's rich history. Its 21 theaters put on shows that bring stories from the Yellow River culture to life. In some theaters, visitors can walk among the performers for a more immersive experience.

Nowadays, theme parks have become popular places for many families in China. Besides world-famous ones like Disneyland, cultural theme parks with traditional Chinese stories are also attracting(吸引) a large number of visitors.

Theme park expert Lin Huanjie notes that Chinese theme parks have made great progress. He points out the importance of creating popular IPs from traditional Chinese stories. However, he also says they still have room for improvement, as foreign theme parks still take the lead in China, and Chinese ones need to catch up in areas such as technology and business philosophies(理念).

  • E. Engineers and artists create helpful or beautiful things.

Reading news helps us learn about exciting things, like a sports team's win or a new science discovery. But it also brings bad news, such as natural disasters or fights between countries.1. So how should we deal with news? Here is a simple guide to handling news wisely.

Check your sources(来源). Some people just rely on one favorite source, such as websites, newspapers, magazines, or TV.2. Also, take time to compare reports from different sources. This can help you avoid one-sided ideas and give you a more complete picture of an event.

Do you know bookmarks? Would you like to use them when you read books? With the development of society, this object has gradually gone out of sight. However, traditional Chinese bookmarks have a long history in Chinese culture. People still love them today because they are useful for marking their place in a book and carry beautiful cultural meanings.

The history of Chinese bookmarks dates back to ancient times. During the Han Dynasty, the earliest bookmarks were mostly made of bamboo or wood, which were very easy to get from nature. They were also simple in shape and they were used to mark where people stopped reading. By the Tang and Song Dynasties, the skills of making bookmarks became better. More materials could be used, such as ivory(象牙) and jade(玉), and some bookmarks were carved(雕刻) with simple patterns. They had much more artistic value and beauty.

There were small differences in the use of bookmarks between scholars and common people. For scholars, bookmarks were often made of excellent materials like bamboo or jade, and were sometimes carved with famous poems to show their good taste. For common people, they used practical ones made of materials that were less expensive, such as paper or wood.

Traditional bookmarks have different kinds of patterns, each of which has a special meaning. Patterns of pine trees and cranes(鹤) stand for long life, while patterns of lotus(荷花) flowers mean purity(纯洁). Over thousands of years, traditional bookmarks have become an important part of Chinese reading culture, and they have been liked by people from all over the world.

Although modern bookmarks are quite different, traditional ones are still cherished(珍视). Today, they are not only used for reading but also regarded as small works of art and cultural gifts. They show that the love for reading and beautiful things is a long-lasting tradition in Chinese culture.

In Anyue, Sichuan, there are 100,000 cliff carvings(摩崖石刻) with a history of 1,000 years, which are now meeting modern technology. This mix of past and present is bringing new life to these cultural treasures.

Before, people had to travel far into the countryside to see these carvings, and only a few people could enjoy their beauty because of the remote(遥远的) location. Today, a large digital exhibition(数字展览) center allows visitors to experience them easily. Inside the center, technologies like gesture(手势) sensing and AI make the age-old grottoes(石窟) and wall paintings come alive. This makes visitors feel like they are walking among the real ancient carvings.

The Anyue Grottoes Digital Exhibition Center opened in May 2025. It has already attracted more than 150,000 visitors—with daily visits reaching 3,000 during the 2025 summer holiday period.

That's why the Anyue grottoes are considered very important examples of Chinese grotto art. However, these grottoes face some problems. Made of soft sandstone, they are in danger from water and wet weather. Many are in the countryside and hills, making daily protection work difficult.

In 2018, Anyue made a local rule to protect the grottoes. It has worked with some famous universities to study and protect the sites better, using professional(专业的) knowledge to find the best ways to keep the carvings safe. Anyue has promised to continue working hard to protect this cultural heritage.

By the end of 2025, Anyue had already made a mini-program to show its digital work. It lets people explore these stone carvings up close, even if they are far away and cannot visit them in person.
