Karen moved to Chengdu with her parents this year. Many interesting things happened to her and she recorded all of them. Let's read some of them.

Wednesday, January 21st, 2026 | Clear

I'm so excited that I can't fall asleep tonight. Tomorrow, I'm going to Chengdu with my parents! I have always wanted to be like my friend Jessica because her parents once went to Chengdu and told her stories about the spicy hot pot and cute pandas. I never thought I would have the chance to go there too—we're moving there because my parents will work in Chengdu, and it's so great! I can't wait to see this wonderful city.

Friday, January 23rd, 2026 | Cloudy

I'm now in Chengdu, a famous city in Sichuan Province. Today was a great day! I went to the Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding. I saw many pandas rolling on the green grass and quietly eating bamboo. They were even cuter in reality than in photos! At lunch, I tried the famous spicy hot pot. My mouth was burning a bit after eating, but it tasted really delicious. I think I have already fallen in love with this amazing city.

Today is Chinese New Year, also called the Spring Festival. Last night, my parents' friend Li Mei invited us to her house for a big Sichuan-style reunion dinner. We ate Mapo tofu and Gongbao chicken—all the dishes were spicy and yummy! After dinner, we watched the Spring Festival Gala on TV with her family. It was so magical and surprising. I learned a lot about the Chinese Spring Festival today.

I started school on March 4th. It's my first week of school in Chengdu. I don't speak much Chinese, so I study at an international school here. Luckily, my teachers and classmates are all very friendly. They often teach me some local words, like "ni hao" which means hello and "hao chi" which means delicious. We also have interesting after-school activities. This weekend, I will go to a local teahouse to see a Sichuan Opera performance. I have been looking forward to seeing the face-changing performance up close. I'm sure it will be wonderful!

Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) has a long history. In the past, many foreigners found it mysterious and difficult to understand. However, foreigners' ideas about TCM are changing greatly now. This is not simply because many countries teach TCM, but mainly because more people experience its real benefits in their daily lives.

For example, an American internet star recently shared his experience. He visited a TCM store that was very popular in Chengdu because he was suffering from a terrible headache. A doctor there treated him with acupuncture. What made him feel surprised was that his headache disappeared quickly after acupuncture. He recorded this amazing experience and posted the video online, which was watched by lots of people.

There is not just one story. In a city in Northeast China, a moxibustion clinic receives thousands of Russian visitors every year. They travel a long way to get help for health problems like neck and shoulder pain. Almost all of them leave the clinic feeling much better. Similarly, a doctor in Guangzhou recently treated a German patient with a serious cold using herbal medicine, and the patient's fever went down the next day. Such good results are letting more and more people around the world recognize the value of TCM.

With the help of modern technology and creative ways of sharing culture, like including TCM in popular movies and online short videos, this ancient wisdom is reaching new people. The world is starting to see TCM not as something old and mysterious, but as a practical and useful form of healthcare for modern life.

Lots of dogs understand simple words said directly to them, such as "walk" or "treat". However, a new study shows that some "gifted" dogs can learn other words simply by eavesdropping on humans.

The study was conducted by researchers who wanted to know if dogs could learn new words just by overhearing their owners' conversations.

For the study, the researchers gave each dog two new toys. The dogs were allowed to play with them at home. Next, the researchers gave each dog's owner a task: They were asked to speak with another household member and name the two new toys while the dog was nearby (for example, they said, "This is Hobo."). After their conversations, the dog owners placed the new toys in a room with other toys. Then, they asked their dogs to get one of the new toys (for example, "Go get Hobo!"). The dogs were able to pick out the correct new toy after overhearing the names. According to the study, these dogs have language-learning skills similar to those of an 18-month-old human child.

"With some of the dogs, it's like they had no doubt about what they were supposed to be doing," a coauthor of the study said. "They would just go into the room, straight to the correct toy—the new one they had just heard named—and then bring it immediately."

It's important to note that this finding does not apply to all dogs. Only certain dogs, called "gifted word learners", can learn new words this way. Scientists are still not sure why some dogs have this ability.

  • A. It can change how we see the world.
  • B. But we need to avoid rushing from one place to another.
  • C. Some families can't afford plane tickets or hotels for a long trip.
  • D. Even small moments can teach us to be confident and improve our problem-solving skills.
  • E. Remember, the real meaning of travel is not about how far we go.
  • F. Therefore, planning every minute in detail is the key to a perfect trip.

Travel is not always enjoyable. Many of us have felt tired from long car rides or waiting in busy places. Even so, travel is still valuable. 1. It also helps us learn about other people's daily lives.

For teenagers, this kind of experience is very helpful. Travel makes us understand others better. It also teaches us to be patient with and curious about new things. We may start asking questions: Why do people line up differently here? How has their history shaped their lifestyle? 2. For example, we may succeed in reading a subway map. Or we can order food from a menu that's difficult to read. These little successes can bring a strong sense of achievement.

There's so much to learn from travel. 3. We should focus on one thing during our trip—history, nature, sport, or family time. Plan simple stops, like a cafe or a garden, and leave room for surprises. That's because the best experiences often happen unexpectedly.

However, travel isn't always easy—or even possible. 4. But that's not a problem at all, because "travel" doesn't always require a plane ticket. We can get just as much from day trips, cultural festivals, or exploring a different part of our city.

5. It's about stepping out of our daily comfort zone and gaining new experiences. Whether we travel far or stay nearby, these experiences can help us grow and become better people.

三、阅读表达(共10小题;计20分)

A. 完成图表 根据短文内容,完成表格中所缺信息(每空不超过三个词)。(共5小题;每小题2分,计10分)

Reading is a wonderful thing. It not only helps us gain knowledge but also helps us relax. For some readers, reading can be a great way to start their day. Others pick up a book after finishing their homework or right after dinner. But many people like to read at bedtime, when the world gets quiet and nothing comes between them and their book. They say there's nothing better than falling asleep with a fun story and interesting characters in their mind. So, what do you think? Is it good to read before bed?

Some people think it is very relaxing. Reading at night is better than watching TV or looking at your phone. The light from screens can disrupt your body's natural sleep clock. Reading, on the other hand, can help you sleep better by making your heartbeat slower and your muscles relaxed. It feels good to fall asleep with a book after a long day of school and activities. Reading before bed is also good for your mind because it calms your mind and stops you from worrying. This is especially helpful for people who have trouble sleeping.

However, others think it can keep you awake. Not every book is good for night reading. A scary or very exciting story could be too interesting to make you fall asleep early. Then you won't get enough sleep. But if you want to read in the morning, it gives you a reason to sleep well at night, so that you can read when your mind is clear. You can also read during the day, like between classes or after school. Reading when you are awake means you will understand and remember more from the book. If you read when you are tired, you might miss important parts or even forget them after you fall asleep, and then you have to read those pages again the next day.

There is no doubt that we should make reading a habit. And it's fine to read at any time, as long as it doesn't change your daily schedule or affect your health.

根据短文内容,完成下面的表格(一空一词)。

YES
  • Books are better than 1., the light from which can disrupt our body's natural sleep clock.
  • Reading a book at night can help your body 2. and settle down for sleep.
  • Nighttime reading is great for mental health and helps people who have trouble falling asleep.
NO
  • It 3. what we're reading. If it's too interesting, we might be solving the mysteries in our head instead of sleeping.
  • There are many 4. for reading during the day, whether it's in the morning, between classes, or after school.
  • When you're tired, it's hard to 5. what you read.
