Do you know bookmarks? Would you like to use them when you read books? With the development of society, this object has gradually gone out of sight. However, traditional Chinese bookmarks have a long history in Chinese culture. People still love them today because they are useful for marking their place in a book and carry beautiful cultural meanings.

The history of Chinese bookmarks dates back to ancient times. During the Han Dynasty, the earliest bookmarks were mostly made of bamboo or wood, which were very easy to get from nature. They were also simple in shape and they were used to mark where people stopped reading. By the Tang and Song Dynasties, the skills of making bookmarks became better. More materials could be used, such as ivory and jade, and some bookmarks were carved with simple patterns. They had much more artistic value and beauty.

There were small differences in the use of bookmarks between scholars and common people. For scholars, bookmarks were often made of excellent materials like bamboo or jade, and were sometimes carved with famous poems to show their good taste. For common people, they used practical ones made of materials that were less expensive, such as paper or wood.

Traditional bookmarks have different kinds of patterns, each of which has a special meaning. Patterns of pine trees and cranes stand for long life, while patterns of lotus flowers mean purity. Over thousands of years, traditional bookmarks have become an important part of Chinese reading culture, and they have been liked by people from all over the world.

Although modern bookmarks are quite different, traditional ones are still cherished. Today, they are not only used for reading but also regarded as small works of art and cultural gifts. They show that the love for reading and beautiful things is a long-lasting tradition in Chinese culture.
